Philipp Budka

 

Philipp Budka is a social and cultural anthropologist interested in media technologies, information and communication technologies, indigenous media, transnationalism, social and cultural theory, ethnicity, production and transfer of knowledge, ethnographic methods, and football culture. He is currently doing work in a variety of fields such as Northwestern Ontario, Canada, several internet environments, and the University of Vienna, Austria.

current activities

Philipp is currently working at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Vienna to coordinate the project 'SOWI-STEOP - Gemeinsame sozialwissenschaftliche Studieneingangs- und Orientierungsphase' ('Joint Introduction and Orientation Phase for Students of the Social Sciences'). SOWI-STEOP continues and develops student-centred support activities by following best practice models of technology enhanced learning created within the project eSOWI-STEP.

Since 2006, Philipp is regularly giving lectures and seminars in the field of media anthropology at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Vienna.

In 2004, Philipp has started his dissertation studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Vienna. His PhD project, which started in 2006 with ethnographic fieldwork, investigates indigenous information and communication technology and media practices in the Canadian context.

Philipp is member of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) and the Media Anthropology Network of the EASA. Within the Media Anthropology Network he is part of the network's committee and the website's editing team. Philipp is also member of the Gesellschaft für Kanada-Studien (Society for Canadian Studies in German Speaking Countries), the Österreichische Gesellschaft für Amerikastudien (Austrian Association for American Studies), the Association of Internet Researchers, RICTA (Research on ICT with Aboriginal Communities) and the Plattform für Kulturen, Integration und Gesellschaft (Platform for Culture, Integration and Society), the alumni organisation of the Viennese Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology.

He is also actively involved in the Interdisciplinary Internet Research Group (Forschungsgruppe Internet) at the University of Vienna and the initiative Participant Media Observation (Teilnehmende Medienbeobachtung) at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology.

previous activities

From 2007 to 2010 Philipp was working at the eLearning Centre of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Vienna, within the project 'eSOWI-STEP - Gemeinsame Studieneingangsphase der Fakultät für Sozialwissenschaften' ('Joint Introduction Phase for Students at the Faculty of Social Sciences').

From 2006 to 2008 he was employed at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna, where he was working within the e-learning project 'Strategien für vernetztes Lernen' ('Strategies for Networked Learning').

From 2003 to 2006, Philipp was employed at the Austrian Latin America Institute (LAI) in Vienna, where he was, amongst others, in charge of the online learning systems Latin American Studies Online (LASON) and OEKU-Online, the preparation of project proposals (e.g. the EU-funded project LAC-ACCESS), and the co-organisation of conferences (e.g. EU-LAC Senior Officials Meeting on Science and Technology).

Philipp Budka studied Social and Cultural Anthropology and Communications at the University of Vienna, Austria and Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He graduated with a MA (Mag.Phil.) degree in 2003, finishing his studies with a master's thesis about indigenous groups and computer networks.

Philipp was granted the University of Vienna's Research Scholarship in 2008 (Forschungsstipendium der Universität Wien, FNr. 299).

In January 2008, Philipp was awarded the price of the German Foundation for Canadian Studies (Promotionsstipendium der Stiftung für Kanada-Studien, Projektnummer: T191/17475/2008/hk).

In 2007, Philipp received a scholarship for Academic Research Abroad of the University of Vienna (Stipendium für Kurzfristiges Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten im Ausland der Universität Wien).
